- Storyline
It honestly seemed okay, nothing I hadn't seen... but I was willing to give this a shot because the title seemed compelling enough.
After the first five chapters though, I'm still trying to make sense of what I just read because...what?

- Plot
This book reminded me of The Three Dark Crowns series. But then even though I lost interest in that series somewhere into the third book, I still love it. This one however was a mess. I didn't stay long enough to find out how much of a development was going to take place because I wasn't interested and a quick skimming gave me enough information.
First of all, for the most part, this was boriiiing. I'm guessing the first five chapters were supposed to give us some kind of premise to look forward to in the rest of the book. If that was the case, it failed miserably. Nothing about any of that was interesting enough to get me to continue this. The events seemed rushed and underwhelming, the characters were too one-dimensional and didn't even seem to be vital to the story.
Secondly, Mackiel. What even was that? I'm not sure if the author expected us to be sympathetic to Keralie's plight but if she did, again, she failed. We were not given enough to even care what happened to to her or her relationships and the fact that her relationship with Mackiel supposed to be the main point of this, I must say, has me appalled.

-Characters
All of them; one dimensional, not memorable enough for me.

- World building
Bland, made no sense and was just a rip off of every distopian novel ever. Honestly it almost like the world building for The Divergent except with Queens.

- Overall
Nope. Even though I had really low expectations for this book, I was surprisingly disappointed.

This was a really enjoyable read for me. It kept me on my toes and surprised me more then once.

Underwhelming. I had such high hopes for this books - I wished it had made a bigger impression with me.

Lmao this took me so long to read but I loved it so much!

This was a solid book. I didn't know that it was going to be a standalone until everything started wrapping up and I realized there was no way for there to be another book lol! And I like that it was a standalone. I think it makes sense given the plot, and I'm happy that we got to see it resolve.

I'm not going to lie, I did not see that ending coming! I was totally unprepared for who the assassin was and I think it was such a creative and well written plot and ending.

I loved the writing style of how it was switching POVs so we could see the Queen's thoughts, as well as their final moments.

I liked all of the characters a lot. You could tell that they were all really fleshed out with complex backgrounds. I liked the romance that happened as well.

Overall I thought it was a really enjoyable book, but nothing too memorable.

Good but predictable. It was too easy to see the twists and turns coming. Good writing, but not enough to make me love it.

Four Dead Queens is a stand alone fantasy with potential to become a series- maybe we’ll get lucky and be gifted with more of Quadara?? The kingdom of Quadara is separated into four quadrants, each having their own way of life and a queen to protect them and ensure that the quadrants remain loyal to their traditions and lifestyles. Although we get a brief overview of the world-building, I would love to learn more about the quadrants. The Queens, in turn, are controlled by the system of Queenly Law. They are not allowed romantic love, not allowed to ever return home after taking the throne, must produce an heir by the age of 45 (with a donor selected from a party), among others.

Life in Quadara is a life of strict prohibition for the constituents and the queens, but, in a restrictive society, there are always the rebels. Keralie is a professional pickpocket. When Mackiel, her mentor, selects her next target to be a government messenger, Varin, everything goes south. Kera and Varin are thrown together and discover a video describing the deaths of the four queens. Can two teens from different quadrants save them in time?

I enjoyed the dynamic between Kera and Varin. She was raised in Toria (the intellectual quarter) by a loving family but left after her father suffered an accident and embraced the thrill of the underworld. He was raised in Eonia (the futurist, technological quarter) and never met his parents who had been genetically matched and was raised not to show emotion. As their relationship develops, we see them both sharing their views and understanding there is more than what they have always been taught.

A pleasant surprise is how we are introduced to a lot of the world building through the personalities and lives of the queens. The title implies the queens have been murdered, but we are given a background and a storyline for each as their tales are told.

Overall, Four Dead Queen is an impressive debut and I look forward to seeing more from Astrid Scholte.

DID NOT FINISH

I just can't bring myself to finish this one. Too many perspectives that I don't care about, inconsistent writing style and I don't feel the romance. Skipped to the end and the revelation was also a disappointment.
