It’s funny how little I knew about this story until reading it. You’d think I’d have known all about it, it having been adapted to theatre and film, receiving critical acclaim, etc.

I always love a good story about female relationships, and empowerment through those relationships. I think that’s what this story is about, and for that reason, it is timeless. I would read again!

This is a book about two sister and their love for one another. The book is in the form of letters with Celie, the main character, initially writing letters to God and Nettie, Celie’s sister, writing letters to Celie. Eventually, once Celie finds out that her husband has been hiding her sister’s correspondence from her, she begins to write letters to Nettie. Within the letters, each sister details their lives and the events taking place: romance, marriages, new careers, troubles, hurts, etc.

I liked how Nettie’s letters showed her education while Celie’s letters were written in vernacular. Some of the information and commentary regarding Africa I found offensive but overall, I was able to appreciate the story for what it was. And it was certainly a good read - 4 stars!
