Once again, Kate Milford takes us into the cozy wintertime world of Greenglass House. Another band of mysterious guests has descended upon the inn, and the feisty smugglers Clem and Georgie are in a predicament that Milo can't help but try to solve.
The world of Nagspeake is so welcoming that I want to live in it forever - especially in Greenglass House, which is always full of warmth and excitement (and seemingly endless hot chocolate). The town's history of smugglers has been woven together in a considered way that feels real, like you can peer in and look around, and yet somehow also out of time. Milford adds to the sense of place in this sequel with the inclusion of hidden maps, a secretive outsider community, and a magical solstice tradition.
In addition to the lovely setting, I thought one of the strongest parts of this sequel was the continued exploration of Milo's identity and his dealing with micro-aggressions around adoption and heritage. In particular, the scene in which Milo develops his alternate identity of Tengfei was so powerful - you could feel the protection and strength he draws from the backstory. There are also some interesting conversations about the assumptions we make about others that I think are great for an upper elementary school level. This rich emotional background turns what could be just another clever, cute mystery into a deeper story about how imagination helps us grow and heal.
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-arc!

I didn't find Ghosts of Greenglass House. to be as engaging as the previous book but I stuck around for the character development and the atmosphere (and the knowledge that any Meddy content would make me ugly cry).

Listened on audio. Love this series!! I listened to the first last Christmas and got this one just after the holidays this year. It’s cute, cozy, and festive and I’ll continue to make these a holiday read

Delighted the sequel was just as good as the first novel. Also glad I waited to introduce it at Christmastime. We all enjoy these novels and the stories within the story. The characters are quirky and interesting. The foreshadowing is present but not so heavy-handed as to make the outcomes predictable. So creatively written. I want to visit Nagspeake and stay at the Greenglass House!
This book was an amazing sequel and Milo is such an amazing character. The plot of this book was just as interesting as the plot in the first book. I loved how characters from the previous book we revisited. I can’t wait to pick up the next one!
This book series manages to feel both contemporary and old-fashioned at the same time as well as fantastical and realistic. But it doesn't always seem like the two worlds meld together well. However, I still ended up enjoying the story, even if it got overly complicated and quite a bit muddled by the end. It also could have had at least three fewer characters.

Once again, I loved every minute of The Ghosts of Greenglass House. This motley crew is so chaotic and I love it so much. Another really descriptive and fun mystery that kept me guessing and hooked me in from beginning to end. I felt things knit together well in the end and while I didn’t have every detail figured out, there were enough clues that everything felt believable to me. This is delightfully ghosty, wintery, fast-paced, and action packed.
I will be finishing the series as soon as I can!
TW: Microaggressions, panic attack, slavery mention
