A really enriching, beautifully imaginative story that perfectly encapsulates the use of fiction and storytelling as a way of understanding the world.
I think my favourite thing about the story is the subtitle - an ambiguous utopia. It would be easy to take the stance of 'look how perfect and beautiful an anarchist society would be', but throughout there are reality checks - it wouldn't be easy, it wouldn't work perfectly and there would certainly be trade offs. The conversations and discussions around true liberty, and ownership, will definitely stick around for a while.

This book provides a wonderful commentary on the set up of society and the common struggle for power, wealth and knowledge. It speaks to a different way of being. The book is a quiet and honest reminder that western ideas of success might not bear the fruit we expect. Instead, the core of our being is the need to belong and truly connect with others.
I'd already read the novels in this book, but I so enjoyed the accompanying short stories and notes from Le Guin. Highly recommend.

I struggled with this book. I loved the aspects that explored different types of cultures, societies, governments, sexuality, etc... But the book is told in alternating chapters of past and present while there are also many many parallels between the two stories. I found this incredibly frustrating since I kept forgetting what happened at which location. I honestly think if this was told chronologically that I would have given it a higher rating and I would have enjoyed it much more. Lots of really great stuff, very frustrating packaging.
