Book #1 for my new book club.

I liked the first 10/11 chapters of the book as the author talked about his ways of hiding in the forest. Then for a hot second (a chapter) he is a boy soldier, then the end of the book focuses on his rehabilitation. I wanted to hear more about his time as a soldier and not told in a type of flashback. That was my main issue with the book. It is still a good book to read. I was just let down a tad bit.

I’ve been to Africa quite a few times and have read quite a few books about Africa and many were just OK (despite some of them being widely acclaimed). However, there are a few that I thought were amazing. This book was one of my favorites

A Long Way Gone Memories of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah – Amazing story told by a boy in Sierra Leon during the war. The story starts when Ishmael is only 12 years old and covers his time as a solider and his eventual escape.

easily one of the greatest, most engaging simultaneously heartbreaking memoirs i’ve ever read. highly highly recommend this to anyone even tangentially interested in the effects of war on those who are thrust into battle.

Like most memoirs with a war as its backdrop, this was gruesome.

Unlike most memoirs with a war as its backdrop (at least the ones I’ve read), this one dedicated half of its length to the rehabilitation process. And I learned a lot from it.

Because of this book, I now have a newfound respect for all refugee workers who quite literally risk their lives everyday to help others rediscover their humanity and move on from their excruciating past.
