Parts of this book were so horrific I forgot it was a memoir. Extremely well written.

Incredibly heartbreaking and beautifully written. Beah has the special ability to write about mental struggles, like no other.

This book was heavy. I traded a Kurt Vonnegut book for this one while I was in Fort Worth. This book made me more thankful for being alive and it made me check myself and my privileges I was born with. Unreal.

“I believe children have the resilience to outlive their sufferings, if given a chance.”

A Long Way Gone is a heart wrenching story that makes you wish it wasn’t true.

A Long Way Gone follows the life of Ishmael Beah and the tragic events that forced him into the life of a boy soldier. Taking place in Sierra Leone, Africa, we see the blood thirst of the Rebel soldiers and how it influenced so much of the country to leave its people in a constant state of fear. Ishmael and his friends then being forced to take action against the Rebel forces.

Ishmael Beah did an incredible job at telling his story. He put the reader in his shoes to show the terror that he experienced. Beah told the story in such a way that makes you question who the “Rebels” actually were. When survival takes precedent, who is in the wrong?

Not really my style (school read) but I didn't hate it. It was really sad, but it does teach you something about what really happens in the world.

Great book. I could not put it down. I really wanted to know what happpened to Ishmeal and his family. It is incredible that people in the world are living like this and becoming part of the terrible events that are taking place in Africa. Very sad.
