I’m starting to really enjoy Darcy Coates’ work and I’m glad the one that really hooked me was her YA novel. I didn’t even realize it was YA until I came across reviews elsewhere about the book. I should have known by the teenaged cast, however it’s similar in that regard to IT. That’s kind of where the similarities end. I have seen folks say it’s like Stranger Things, however the only similarity is the antagonist and that’s all. It is a fast paced novel with very little character development, which is fine if you want something you can fly through and yet still enjoy. All I know is that this is now my gateway into reading more of her work.

This is the first book I've read and finishe in over 2 months, and it's perfect horrifying story, with perfectly built and fleshed out characters, as well as a small little town to accompany the absolute madness that is this book is just what I needed for me to get out of my reading slump. 5/5 would recommend to anyone looking for a gory thriller, with interesting characters and lore.

It’s no secret that Darcy Coates is one of my favorite authors but I must say for the first time ever I found myself a bit underwhelmed by the story. I mean, sure it gave some interesting Jeepers Creepers vibes with a solid creature feature but the characters and plot just didn’t do it for me this time.
Hopes dialogue and behavior often felt more fitting for someone a few years younger. Had her age not been explicitly mentioned, I’d have easily placed her around 10 or 12. As for Abby, while she makes for a decent lead, I found her personality a bit flat.
That said, it’s still an enjoyable read for those who love a good creature feature. Personally this one just wasn’t what I was hoping for.

This book is utterly creepy and disturbing. This book will have you looking over your shoulder at night and double thinking that red string you saw earlier. The imagery depicted in this book is amazing and disturbing at the same time. Do I recommend this book.... yes it's a must read if you enjoy a good disturbing sometimes macabre book.
