I genuinely don't understand how people are saying this is YA - I am a grown woman and at points in this book I felt violently ill. It's a good book but I am concerned for the author - please don't read this if you're looking for a YA thriller

In the small town of doubtful there are some rules

Don’t walk alone, or the stitcher will find you.

Don’t stay out late, or the stitcher will take you.

Don’t close your eyes, or the stitcher will remake you.

Abby and her friends are used to people vanishing, and when they’re found, they’ve been dismembered and stitched together in unnatural ways.

When Abby’s younger sister goes missing, she is desperate to get her back. Can Abby and her friends find her before it’s too late?

I love Darcy Coates and was super excited for her new YA Horror book. I just recently finished the Haunting of Leigh Bardo and loved it so had high hopes. However, despite the excellent writing, this one just fell flat for me. There was just something about it that is hard to put my finger on but didn’t work for me. I never got invested in the story and I didn’t connect with any of the characters. I really did enjoy the strange small-town vibes. This book was pretty vivid, but the characters felt that they were younger than the stated age, so it was an interesting dilemma. The writing is so creepy and tense and very chilling.

If you are looking for the perfect YA Horror book for this spooky season, you will want to check this one out.

Pros:

Great found family that quickly absorbs you into caring about each member.  Potentially lightly based on the Scooby Gang but not in a blatant and annoying way.

This book takes nightmares and makes them real and it does so without resorting to on page sexual violence.  Some might say that the gore could be seen as such but to me it was more gore for the sake of shock and horror not a hidden meaning of sexualizing the victims or act of killing.

Cons:

People who read more horror might find parts of this story predictable, for me that wasn’t a problem because I wanted the details on how and why more than the who and how.

DNF at 75% While it was YA, it kept my interest until the point I stopped reading. “IT” vibes, so not my cup of tea.

This was my first Darcy Coates book and I can confidently say I will be reading more of her work. I felt like I was watching a movie because she has such a strong grasp on how to use imagery in her writing.

I’ll start off by saying that I’m shocked this book is categorized as YA horror. I’ve read a lot of horror books, and this is the first one to ever give me that pit-in-my-stomach scared feeling. If you’re a younger reader, I would go into this one with caution.

I loved the main characters in this book. Each one was well thought out and they all had different personalities that shone throughout the book (I made friends with a cool bug) and fully developed backstories.

The illustrations throughout the book really drove home the uneasy feeling I was getting when reading about the Stitcher. Seeing glimpses of him and his aftermath was a nice addition.

The only reason I’m giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wasn’t thrilled with the direction the book went with the Stitcher himself. I won’t say too much, as I don’t want to spoil the book, but I truly wished the stitcher was the more obvious choice as I would’ve like to see how that unfolded. Though, I do like the plot line of how the “obvious choice” ties in to the Stitcher.

Well done, Darcy. Well done.

Some of the best written characters, each one is unique and they all play off each other very well. Solid story, I felt like the end was a bit abrupt but there wasn't much else to wrap up so yeah
