Catching up…
Long ago read, now bringing my review to Goodreads.
I am and have been quite a fan of Grisham’s earlier novels. I like courtroom dramas, and attorney dilemmas. I love the mystery of it, and the intensity…
Because…
As readers we are given inside views into both the defense attorney and prosecutor’s world.
And…
For me, finding justice is always the best reward.
So…
I am open to reading legal thrillers. Which is typically Grisham’s wheelhouse.
And…
When someone is wrongly convicted, it is always an interesting case to see how it is addressed.
Which…
Brings me to this story. As readers we are meeting Cullen Post, an “innocence lawyer” who is focusing on the apparent wrongful conviction of a black man named Quincy Miller…
Who…
Was believed to be set up to take the fall for the murder of a white lawyer, 22 years ago.
Side note:
Grisham has served on the board of directors of The Innocence Project.
Now…
Taking on this case isn’t going to be easy.
Because…
When you believe someone has been wrongly convicted, that means there is somebody else out there who really did it.
How are they going to feel about having this case reopened?
And…
Just because someone claims themselves to be innocent, are they really?
Any way we look at it, Post is in for an important role that will put him in provocative and dangerous circumstances. The question is…
Will he be able to handle it?
And…
In Post’s efforts to turn justice around, will it be served?
In some ways this felt like a mature version of Nancy Drew adventures.
But…
Grisham has created an interesting, likable character in Post which makes this a truly worthy read.

I am sadly in the minority of readers who did not care for this book, which is disappointing because I was excited to read it. However, though Grisham does offer insight into the prison system and the story he outlines is probably and tragically not unrealistic, I just couldn't get into it. Cullen Post is a good man, but he is also such a cliche, and I had trouble really connecting to any of the characters, even as I tried. You can't force these things, and in the end it just wasn't for me. Oh well, glad it resonated with so many readers, but for me it's onward and upward:-)

I had gotten tired of John Grisham - seemed to be that after awhile all his books were the same - until this one. The premise was interesting so I picked it up to see how it would do. I was involved from the first page. I liked the characters and how the story progressed. Worth the read.
