An enjoyable debut thriller with lots of twists and turns. The main character is established as a rather boring accountant type who doesn't take any risks, and then the story develops as he takes one wild risk after another, and all for the obvious reason. For me, the ending was particularly lacking in plausibility, but not to the point of flinging the book across the room.

I love Peter Swanson, but this one just didn’t work for me!

There aren't many great reviews floating around out there for this book, but I thought it was a really fun read. I didn't expect it to be revolutionary or a work of literature, but I did want an interesting afternoon read and this book gave me just that. Trying to piece together who this girl with no heart is and whether she's hero or villain was more of a roller-coaster than I expected and for me that was a pleasant surprise. I anticipated a very cut and dry mystery story but Swanson instead wrote up a curious and strange story of past acquaintances and mistaken presumptions. For a fun & unique read I'd definitely suggest this book to a friend, have in fact.

I’m so sad I didn’t enjoyed this one! I’ve loved and had a great time with other books by Peter Swanson so my expectations were high, and unfortunately I dis not enjoyed this story at all!
The characters are all so unlikeable, George did not feel like the main character at all he was very dull and annoying, there was no difference from his current self to his younger self, which says a lot about him.
Plus that ending was awful, it pissed me off, I really didn’t liked it.

I have loved every Peter Swanson book I’ve read, but this just completely missed the mark for me. A so-so storyline with a wholly unsatisfying ending.

4/5 stars

Such a fucked up yet such an intriguing story. I don't even know what to write without spoiling anything but damn it was so fucked up.

If I had to choose two words to describe this book it would be boring and cringy. This was Peter Swanson's first attempt at the mystery/thriller genre and while this was a mystery it was not very thrilling which I think he has leaned into more with his later books. If I had to give a recommendation it would be to skip this novel and just go for the ones he has published after.

As for some of my actual criticisms of the novel; first, it was so boring. I think it was 50 - 50 in the actual story being boring and the audiobook narrator not making the story more exciting. Second, it was cringy. Mostly the sex scenes which there are at least two that stick out in my mind but there could be more. Third, it was confusing. There are multiple characters who go by multiple aliases in the book and overall I just think there were too many characters in the book and I caught myself losing track at times. There are also two timelines and I would occasionally find myself forgetting or being confused about which timeline we were currently in.

3.5

This is my least favorite of Peter Swanson's books but was enjoyable nonetheless.

Glad I read The Kind Worth Killing first because if I had picked up this pile of pish first I would never have read it! Anyway, that's 3 days of my life I won't get back!
