I don't know if this is true of all libraries but I wish mine wouldn't lump all picture books under the JE banner.
This is an illustrated story that should be shelved in the appropriate age group.

Heartwarming story of the special bond between a mute girl and an injured crane. Based on the true story of a crane whose early warnings saved Chinese villagers from drowning in a flood. This tale contains themes of self-acceptance, kindness, friendship, and environmental conservation.

I enjoyed this book!

I was curious to know more about the winter illness and why it made Lotus such a social pariah to her classmates. For me, one thing that stood out was the concept of an animal acting as a friend within a children's book without being anthropomorphic. While embellished in places and theatrical in others, I believe it is a multicultural book because a Chinese village history's accrual occurrence inspired it. I also believe it would be a must-have for my diversifying library because accurate East Asian representation is lacking in the publishing industry.
