3.5 Stars. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. it is surely low brow and not meant to be an intelligent use of language. that said page turners are supposed to be for vacation reading, right. in that vein this is perfect summer reading: fun, simple, and straight forwardly entertaining.

More like 2.5 stars. There are parts of this that I really enjoyed and parts that I had trouble concentrating on. I really enjoyed learning of Tarkin's past and childhood. I also enjoyed seeing his relationship evolve with Vader. I just couldn't get into the main plot which was unfortunate.

This book started off very slow, but once it got going, and the interplay between Tarkin and Vader, it was an amazing read.
tarkin was not gay enough in this where was the scene where tarkin attends a drag show
The profile of Grand Moff Tarkin, the Star Wars villain everyone loves to hate (as opposed to the villains - such as Boba Fett and Darth Vader - that everyone loves to love), has been long-awaited by some. And, though I was expecting to enjoy it, I was disappointed to find that it was just okay. I found myself skipping pages just to get through the story. At first I found myself liking Tarkin, which is understandable since most authors write protagonists in a way that makes you sympathetic to them. But I wanted the villain that heartlessly destroyed an entire planet just because he could, something even Vader was good enough not to have considered. Eventually you learn why Tarkin is so cold, and reminded that he is indeed as heartless as he is portrayed. Vader is given a tiny bit more humanity, which is nice for those of us like him. The highlight is in the telling Tarkin's early history - told through a series of flashbacks. But any book where you can skip 50 or so pages without losing your understanding of the plot is not as tightly written as it should be.
