I couldn't put it down, started it in the afternoon, finished it in the evening, idk it just really caught me, the style of writing just completely got me hooked, it was flowing so smoothly and everything was happening and just being inside of Trish's head the entire time especially towards the end was just so interesting. it genuinely felt like it was a person's thoughts, which in a way it was, I loved most of everything that happened, but it's still bugging me that we didn't get anymore backstory on what the mom was actually planning and like what actually happened, i get that
she hired Ravi to kill Trish's dad but I wish there was more backstory, or explanation yk? like how did she get back into contact w Ravi? or why did Ravi stay? or why did Ravi keep getting sicker, was the mom poisoning him or smtg? also theres no complete closure.. like yk a good wrap up? I didn't get that feeling. like it feels like somtg else needs to happen after the ending.
anyways, other than the closure bit, I genuinely loved this book a lot, Trish is such a good character and
although I wish she had kept fighting I understand why she stopped
I love the realisticness in a way? like yk real life doesn't have reasoning for what's gonna happen next, the
slow deterioration of Trish's like the way you could see her getting worse both mentally and physically? it just was rlly cool
ANYWAYS no more ranting, read the book, it's good 👍🏼👍🏼

It was a short read, but riveting nonetheless. Though I am completely uncomfortable with their family dynamic.. Talk about fucked up.

Much of the story is telling rather than showing, and I didn’t feel invested in the protagonist’s problems. Which is crazy since murder is one of them…

If I would describe the book in one word it would be intense.
This book talks a lot about violence, but it makes you think about that. Although in some books you think the martial arts are easy here you see and feel the struggle of doing the right move.
The main character is a really strong woman, and I love it! She shows that you should never give up, but work with what you can, and that the hard work will pay off.
The author made me meet a new culture that I didn’t even know, and that’s something I really enjoy because I feel like I am really traveling.

Although it was a strong story there were moments that lifted the mood with a bit of romance. But doesn’t make you forget that the story is about the power that a woman has.
This is a story where you can learn with the character, you may not always agree with Trisha but you will think of her and think about what you are doing.

The story will be marked in me for a long time beacuse of all the power, culture and thinking i did about it.

I received this ARC from Netgalley.

Fight Like A Girl by Sheena Kamal is a story that I was excited to read. The idea of strong girls fighting back is one that we need more of, and Sheena mostly delivers.

The best thing this book has going for it is that it’s a quick read, but honestly, I felt let down by the time I finished it. The closure for the characters, especially Trisha, just wasn’t there for me. The book, marketed as a thriller, also feels a bit too shallow to really thrill.

My biggest problem with the book, and that almost got me to stop reading, was the writing style. I can get behind a more casual voice, but honestly, Trisha interrupts herself mid- thought so many times that it got a little exhausting, and at times it really pulls me out of the moment.

Set in the East-End of Toronto (so, basically my neighborhood) and featuring a Trinidadian protagonist who is coming to terms with her father's death and her mother's indifference.

The description given by the publisher makes it seem like more of a thriller-mystery, but I found it to be more of a family drama with mysterious elements (those elements being the full extent of certain character relationships as well as the motivations for their actions).

There is also a subplot about her love of Muay Thai, which offers quite a big dose of "girl power" vibes despite its troublesome self-talk about "making weight" that goes hand-in-hand with fight-based sports. These moments gave the main character more weight (proverbially speaking) and made her feel more well-rounded (like a person instead of just a character serving the plot of a story). I also appreciate the character using their hobby as an escape, even if it was to her own detriment.

In some way, this felt a lot like My Sister, the Serial Killer in that it's short, it doesn't really waste time at the start, and there's this sense of moral ambiguity that permeates the plot.

Definitely enjoyed this one. Probably a 3.5 star read for me, but I'm bumping it to a full 4 stars in support of a local female author!

(who doesn't love reading a book set in their own town, right?)
