I'm a big fan of Frederick Forsyth, and I was hopeful that Ludlum would be something along the same lines. I was not disappointed. 'Bourne' has just enough plausibility to be true, even at its most ridiculous, which helps drive thrillers. But it never bogs itself down with explaining things, overanalyzing things, or giving the reader unnecessary background information. There's room for it, of course. It's helpful to know something about the Vietnam conflict, or French-Algerian relations. At the same time, it's not required knowledge, you could read the book just as well without it (and I'm sure many have).

Ludlum does a fine job of keeping the reader guessing what Bourne's real identity is throughout. Questions exist about other characters as well. I was continulously waiting to see which characters would turn out to be the exact opposite of what they seemed. To Ludlum's credit, however, he avoids the cheap shots and easy twists, which is a trait I admire in an author.

I'll read the second book, and if it's good enough I'll go for the third. It's a 600 page book that flew by and kept my interest, which is always a good thing.

DID NOT FINISH: 28%

I was bored by him and felt like I didn't care what happened, and also the parts about him slapping Marie around were just not the vibe

decent. def something up w/ that carlos fellow…

One of the best thrillers I have read in a while. This book really had me hooked. Even the last page of the book had something interesting to come! It started off at a high pace and never had me uninterested even for a min. No scene was unnecessary, no dialogue unwarranted. All the pieces seemed to fit perfectly. Even though I have seen the movie, I would say the book is much much better than the movie.

Updated:

Watched the movie again and must say that there is no relation between the story in the movie and the book. And the book is much much better than the movie.

I could not finish it. I could barely start it.

Exciting!

I am totally into these 70’s spy books right now. I love reading about the high tech things that now we just take for granted. I love reading how they have to find a phone and memorize phone numbers. We have definitely changed our skill sets. If you want this to be like the movie, you will be disappointed. The movie basically shares character names and a premise of a guy with amnesia, but the book has lots of parts that the movie never even touched. Even the main antagonist is different. The woman is different and the allies are different. This book totally can still hold its own against the like of today’s Gone Girl. If you are in the mood for a fast paced spy thriller, give Bourne a try.
