a very slow start, but it picked up a lot in the middle. the end kind of ground to a halt for me, though. the miniaturist adds an element of magical realism throughout the novel, and at the end gets pulled back down into realism while while also not being really explained. i wish that the book had either left that very open-ended and magical or given more detail, as the middle ground really doesn’t work for me. however, this was overall an interesting glimpse at a period in history i know literally nothing about.
i never would have read this if not for it being a book club pick, but i don’t regret it.
MAJOR content warning for societal homophobia of the sort you would expect from a puritan nation in the 1600s.

The book itself was 2 stars, one star subtracted from my final rating because of the completely unnecessary use of the n-word by a white author. I felt like the aspect of the story I cared about most (the mystery of the miniaturist) was left unresolved. The rest of the story was relatively bland and I found Nella's character to be pretty annoying.

I really enjoyed this book.
I bought it on a whim years ago (probably because of its cover, which is LOVELY), so I was more than pleasantly surprised when I started it this month.
The plot is thick through and through, talk about a tense ride! I thought I wouldn't be able to like the characters, but in the end, I really ended up rooting for them.
It is dark, and very descriptive, so bear that in mind and look for TW (gore, blood, injuries). There's also homophobia and xenophobia and enforced religion in public affairs...
I liked how it shows the reader a peek into Amsterdam's life all those years ago, and how merchants were so important, the secret workings of their houses, what kind of deals they made and society had to accept, etc.
