This is my second time reading this book-probably one of the best of Allingham's mysteries, although certainly not a typical Golden Age Whodunnit. This is a very atmospheric, character-driven novel about crime and manipulation, set in London in the post-second WW era, and her detective, Albert Campion, has certainly matured and improved over time.

The novel is nicely written, but with a markedly dated style that makes it a bit harder for me to really get into it. It’s captivating in many parts, but not very profound or layered (which it doesn’t need to be), but I wouldn’t read it again.

A bit more thriller than I usually expect from Allingham, and a little grittier. Tautly written, though, and a handful of extremely memorable characters.

Hard work for me. I think I was expecting an easy read, but the dialogue was really off-putting!

Second time attempting this book, got a little further along than last time, but it's pretty clear that it's not for me. I will now joyfully abandon it.
