This series just gets better and better, although perhaps I was easily charmed by the undercurrent of political commentary Butcher weaves into his books--characters take strong stances against torture, treating civilians as "enemy noncombatants," and overstepping the Constitu--I mean, laws of a country. Yet it never seemed heavy-handed to me, nor did it overshadow the plot and the characters I've come to love. The next book in this series should be coming out soon and I'll be looking forward to it...

Another solid book, although I still think book 3 has been my favorite so far!

While the story mostly picks up right after the events in book 3, clearly some time has passed. As before, the story switches amongst the different main characters, and I really enjoyed most of it. Amara and Bernard are traveling with Gaius, and while some things occurred that added some intrigue to the whole story, the overall quest was probably the least interesting part of the book. I'm sure I missed some details because my mind wandered a bit during those scenes. But what happened with them is definitely important to the main plot, so pay attention.

While Tavi begins the book as the leader of the First Alerans (which is where he ended in the previous books), he ends up on multiple quests that ultimately leave his friends in charge, but before that happens, he has to deal with the senator and his bureaucratic nature. I found all of this very interesting, frustrating, and entertaining, depending on what was happening. But no matter what, it kept my interest.

But in this book, my favorite parts were the ones with Tavi and Isanna and the development of their relationship. I also loved the conversation Tavi had with Gaius at the end.

Overall, I think this was a solid book and I'm looking forward to the next book!

I love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series (I was late to discover them and now they're a passion) but I only warmed slowly to the first few books in this series because it seemed like most of them were about fighting and battles in great detail. This novel takes it to that next level. There are still wars raging, but the characters are fully developed and really interesting. I enjoy it the most when the protagonist out-thinks his or her opponents (and there are some strong women in this book) in never-predictable ways.

Definitely my favorite so far of the series!

I wanted to live in this book. Jim Butcher. OMG.

Jim Butcher is a master at crafting fantasy fiction. There is just no other way to say it. This is indisputable fact.

In Captain's Fury, Butcher continues to build the pressure in his master plot. However, the book does a fantastic job of standing on its own legs, telling a complete, and totally engrossing, story. Tavi remains the central character of the book, yet Butcher has woven full tapestries of subplots with his supporting cast of characters. Their stories are just as compelling as Tavi's.

The world building in this book remains stellar and rock solid. Butcher has created the laws of magic in his world and the societal norms and he sticks to them. That is one of the things I so appreciate about this author, he dots his Is and crosses his Ts. His story is methodically laid out in a consistent manner that makes his fantasy world come to life in the reader's mind.

I am eager to read the next two books, although I am sure to have a serious book hangover when I am finished.

Picking up two years after the last installment, Butcher finally lets his hero have his name acknowledged and gives him some powers, but damn if he doesn't make all the characters earn it. Also, best offensive military use of a volcano.
