The book has some good set up and plot in the first two thirds but the last third feels like everything is a bit rushed and just magically resolves in a nice neat ending. There is tons of funny dialogue and the emotional relationship between Liza and her mom and dad is really complex and beautiful. I would have loved for that to be explored more, but the romance portion of the book which feels a bit weaker causes this relationship to be pushed out of focus a bit. There is too much unnecessary product placement for my taste. Overall it's a solid read.

romance was cute, coming from a person who isn’t the biggest fan. i was really here for the baking though. i love baking competitions and the narrator for the story deserves all the roses!

good but also some parts i felt were... basic?
“There is one other reason why I haven’t dated anyone...I haven’t met anyone worth risking my heart for."

“Ugh,” Ben groans after devouring what’s left of his bun. “This is the best.” I peer over at James, curious how he’ll judge them. His eyes close briefly as he chews. When he swallows, he tips his head toward me. “Can you make these?” “Of course I can. My mom taught me years ago.” He stares deep into my eyes. “Marry me.” Chopsticks clatter onto the table. I don’t need to see who dropped them. Thankfully, Mom knows he’s joking. I slap James on the arm. “You keep that up, and she’ll make sure you’re stuck with me forever.” “I could live with that,” he quips.”

The book was very cute. It made me giggle like I was back in high school all over again. This is a great read for people who love rom com and helicopter mom comedies.

The setting is fun it's set in summer in Houston, Texas. Liza Yang is an 18 year old who is still trying to figure out what she wants to do for a living and where she wants to go to college. Liza has a helicopter mom who is trying to set her up with a good ASIAN guy. Liza is aggravated about this. Its quite funny. Liza's mom owns a bakery and all Liza wants to do is bake with her mother but mom is having non of it she must go to a good college and get a 'real' job. Liza's dad owns a restaurant and is the mediator between the 2.

I love the characterization and relationships in this book. Liza's character is stubborn and stong-willed and a little rebellious. Her best friend Grace keeps her from taking it too far.

And of course can't have a rom com without the first meeting. Which is this case is absolutely hilarious because James is just as stubborn as she is but he's more quiet, reserved, and socially awkward than she is which makes for a terrible first impression which of course makes for hilarious dialogue.

Overall I enjoyed this book.

This is a cute rom-com where The Great British Baking Show meets The Bachelorette. Liza Yang is at odds with her traditional mother over her future, including who she dates. Baking is the one thing these two share a passion for. Her mother blindsides her during the family’s annual baking contest by having aloof the contestants be eligible boyfriend material. It’s not too long before one contestant catches her eye. The family dynamics round out this solid read.
