In The Sun Also Rises, Jake and his friends trade in their lives of debauchery in Paris for a few weeks in Pamplona Spain just in time for the bullfighting fiesta. I've read somewhere that this book is meant to be a depiction of "the lost generation" post-World War I. Not to sound bleak, but to me, it's not too different from my generation today; we're all a little bit unsure of what we want out of life. The title, The Sun Also Rises, sounds self-soothing: something I would say to comfort myself when times were hard.

To me, Bullfighting was an interesting tradition to highlight. I believe it's a huge metaphor in this novel, representing the situation Jake and his friends are in. It could be that Brett, the matador, puts on a performance - waving her seductive cape to attract men, bulls, who eventually end up hurt and burned - just like Cohn, Mike, and even our main character Jake. Or they could all be bulls, being tempted to charge or coerced into playing a role for the larger audience (aka society) but never really getting what they want and end up with nothing.

While I do appreciate the symbolism woven into the book and how thought-provoking it was, I found Hemingway's writing style very off-putting - almost too simplistic and direct. Or maybe I'm just ignorant and unappreciative.

Meh. Bunch of expats getting drunk and having love triangles. Jake was the only redeemable one but he was impotent and could not love Brett the same way others could.

The writing style was easy to read, though it got repetitive after 350 pages. Overall not redemptive as far as character and plot arc.

No wonder he offed himself.

Ugh. Review soon.
