The first half of the volume was engaging and fast-paced. Joker and the Dollmaker's story was a page turner for me and the fight sequences were beautifully drawn. It was unsettling and odd in the best kind of way but then the second storyline with the Penguin felt a bit clunky and all over the place. The introduction of a new eye-patch wearing lady "antagonist" was with no background or easement and the plot kind of just threw in the Penguin without any build-up to why the "mystery" criminal did what they did.

How noir can we actually get with this kind of Batman and this kind of psychotic villains?

This was an interesting story.

This is about Batman going after the Joker when he escapes Arkham Asylum with the help of a guy called the dollmaker. As he goes about finding Joker and the Dollmaker, he finds clues that lead him to the Dollmaker but having to find Gordon and a girl and dealing with Dollmakers men, Dollmaker escapes and Batman has to follow. Which leads him to other criminals of Gotham.

This story was good but after thinking about it and what lead Batman to the other criminals such as the Penguin, it took me a bit to make that connection. It throw me in a loop when Batman went after Penguin. Now I looked back through and then it made sense.

It did have a lot of surprises that I was not expecting but it did keep me interested to see what Batman was going to do and how he will catch the Joker and what is going on with the Joker.

The characters were awesome and I liked the story and want to know what is going on in the story.

Overall I liked it but not as compelling as other Batman comics that I read.

All I really need to say about this book is that when the "good" people of Gotham decide the Batman killed the Joker, they proceed to have an Occupy-style protest while wearing clown masks. Bruce proceeds to run through this protest on foot in costume and is surprised when they try to kill him. Set your phasers to WTF.
