At first I really enjoyed this book about a group of kids who form a "loser" soccer team in retaliation to school policy that they must play a sport. As someone who doesn't care for the play by play detail of sports books, this book had quite a few-both soccer and football. I found these scenes tedious. On the other hand, I feel like people who love sports and sports books might dislike or even be offended at the Losers' mockery of the game and their school and community.
Really good book! Didn't expect it to get so deep towards the end, kinda thought it would just be a cute lil book. But I really liked it! Not your typical sports book, if at all. Though it did help that I love soccer... ;)
Misfits finding a place on a soccer team that is more about philosophy than sport. Good dad/son figuring one another out aspect. Awkward love interest. Overall ok.
Everything goes to hell in a handbasket for Jack Logan and his friends when their principal dies on the school track, attempting to set a world record. Football coach and sports maniac Brian Muhldinger takes over as principal and demands that all seniors-including Jack-play on a school sports team. Jack lives in the shadows of his athletic brothers and locally famous former football player dad, and has no interest in sports. He doesn't care, either, that his school has a record number of athletic wins. In a tongue-in-cheek move, he recruits his friends and the school's quirkiest teacher to form a soccer team with one goal: to lose every game they play. Their team's efforts go viral, however, and Jack grapples with just how committed he is to losing.
This book also includes a balance of humor, romance and family conflict perfect for guys and girls. It's a quick read, and I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't a predictable, typical sports book. This would be a great grown-up choice for any fans of Mike Lupica or Tim Green.

What a fun read! Soccer, football, drama, touch of romance. Engaging characters, lively plot, vivid writing.
BOOK TALK: They don't call it Muscle High for nothing. Fremont High School Football is king of the state and the new principal is the football coach. To spread the winning culture completely through the school Coach Muhldinger announces that all seniors must participate in a sport their senior year. For Jack and his friends this is a painful prospect so they organize a soccer team for non-athletes and their goal is to lose. Little do they know what started as a lighthearted response will ignite a social media storm, out of control bullying, revenge and trips to the hospital.

Upper Middle School
Well written and enjoyable read.
Well written and enjoyable read.
It would not surprise me if some enterprising movie person turned this into a cheesy teen movie. The story has serious cinematic potential.
The writing suffers a bit from telling rather than showing, but it's not enough to be more than a minor nuisance. The story actually raises some interesting questions about the nature of competitive sports, and I enjoyed the fact that this was narrated by a kid caught between the two sides so that you could better understand both sides of the issue.

A little long and a few things a bit odd in terms of character -sometimes things unexpected sometimes too expected and predictable. Overall humorous and an interesting take on sports.
