Have you finished all the Harry Potter books and need something new to read? Try The Emerald Atlas! Kate, Michael, and Emma lose their parents and end up on a wild adventure that includes magic, time travel, dwarfs, and an evil countess. If you love action and adventure, you won't be disappointed! This one is a YHBA nominated book for 2013-2014.

This is a book that you read for the plot. The characters themselves are nice enough, but they're all pretty straightforward archtypes without much to distinguish them. Normally this would be a big fat negative, but somehow Stephens makes it work and work well. I also feel like I should be complaining about the writing style since Stephens does everything you're not supposed to do in creative writing (telling, rather than showing, in particular happens a lot) but again, somehow it works. Kudos to Stephens for breaking all the rules and still crafting a story that sucked me in.

Overall, it's an appealing fantasy that should please fans of the genre. I'll pick up the next book in this trilogy.

The semi-orphan beginning seemed a little tired but there are only so many ways to have kids removed from their parents. I really liked the twists and the way fantasy characters were revealed..killed...came back from being killed, etc. This was fun and I plan to read the next one.

To any Gilmore Girls fans, John Stephens was one of the writers for the show. This book is nothing like the show, as a heads up but if you like YA fantasy, get past the beginning and you'll probably like it.

I loved the first two thirds of this kids book so much. The end drug on and had too many climaxes but overall was a delight to listen to with the kids

I started this book over a year ago, got really bored of it. Moving to slow and I DNF it after like 109 pages into it. Then like two days ago I wanted to try shrink my TBR and I chose this book and I read the remaining 300ish pages and loved it so much.

When i read the same book 3 years ago, it was intriguing and i would more like to place it under mystery now than fantasy. While re-reading it now, somehow i failed to remember the story, maybe because it didn't impress enough to be registered or was it a figment of my imagination? But i used to have certain images in my mind and had no success finding out from what books it came from, not that i tried. But while re-reading this one again, i had a strange feeling the book was getting heavier and some force resisting me reading it. On the course, i remembered certain visions only to soon after find it in the following pages of the book. It was like the magic itself. Can anyone else relate?
I'm not saying it was a great story or so, but there's something in this book that makes you to go further, not wanting to stop and i remember having that feeling when i first time read it, and now again. Maybe that's why i didn't remember the whole story but rather parts of it to keep me going deep down ? either way, a fun read :)

Also it reminds me of Narnia in a bit and in addition to deja vu, the book makes me settle in, as if i had lived there, this only makes me even more nostalgic!
