While I liked this book, there were several places where it felt less like a book and more like a script. I don't want to put any spoilers in my review, so I'll just mention that there were a few weaker points in the plot where I would have liked to see the it more well developed. All in all it is a fun read and I think that anyone looking for a fun fantasy book targeted to children would probably enjoy this one.
We listened to the audio book read by Jim Dale. He's a fabulous reader! The plot itself was confusing at times and seemed to have too much going on, but it was still a fun listen for our road trip!
One of our new family faves. Fast moving and compelling adventure with lots of heart and emotional turmoil. Can't wait to start book 2.
Listening to Jim Dale "read" a story is more like old fashioned storytelling around the fire. There were many days these past two weeks that i reached my destination early to just sit there and listen for awhile before going in.
Great adventure, humor and a few surprises.
Enjoy, now i'm off to get the second book on cd.

Wow. I honestly forgot how good this book was. The characters are fantastic, the plot is intriguing , and the worldbuilding is marvelous. Read the thing, guys.
Lumayan menarik. Seri keduanya kapan terbit ya?
This is the story of three children whose parents leave them when the eldest, Kate, is four. They bounce from orphanage to orphanage, never giving up hope that they'll one day be reunited with their parents, never forming attachments to their caregivers or the children with them. Then, when Kate is 14, they are taken in by an old man who is more than he seems. While under his care, the children stumble upon a magical book and have to keep it safe from an evil Countess, indescribable creatures, and even their own desires.
My children, 12, 10, and 8, loved this book, and I did too. I look forward to reading the other books in this series, as well as seeing if John Stephens has written any other books. The only reason this book didn't get five stars is that the dialogue pulled me out of this story several times. I don't think anyone says "gotta" quite that much in real life!

I liked it throughout, more for the characterization of the children with real foibles than for the plot. In the end it irritated me because it left a great gaping gap for the sequel to fit into. If you want to write a three-volume book, first check whether you are Tolkien. If you are not, then you should resolve your book's central conflict in that book. Being part of a planned trilogy or series does not permit a book not to be complete within itself.
