I love me an action packed middle-grade adventure. And The Emerald Atlas did not disappoint there! Fans of Harry and Percy would definitely enjoy this series too.

This is listed in my library in the children's section, and I fear that because of that, teenagers won't pick it up, and they should. I'm 21 and I loved it. I got over worrying about what I read a couple of years ago, be it in the children's section, the teens, or the adults, if it sounds interesting, I'll give it a shot. Man am I glad I picked up this one. Its a well written debut novel. The characters are really fantastic. Emma is by far my favorite. I love that girl. The premise is 14 year old Kate, 12 year old Michael, and 11 year old Emma are orphans, passed from one orphanage to the next and when they get sent to Cambrige Falls, things get a little interesting. They find this green book, travel through time, meet an evil witch, some kidnaped children and some dwarfs among other things. This is set up to have more novels (three? possibly) and I can't wait to read the next one. The characters are well written, believable, interesting, complex, and the plot is fun and draws you right in. Its great for kids, teens or adults.

4,5 stars

This was such a fun read! I picked this book up on a whim while I was reading another book that I really wasn't enjoying that much and I just needed something fast, fun and not overly complicated. Since The Emerald Atlas was on my shelf for almost a year now and it seemed like a quick little adventure story, I thought that this was the perfect book to get me out of my little reading slump. I'm still mad at myself for not picking it up sooner.

We start off with an interesting premise: Three siblings are taken away from their home on Christmas eve. Their parents need to hide them to protect them from an unknown evil. Chased by monsters, the kids are brought away safely to an orphanage where they spent the next few years of their life. They go from one orphanage to another, never really settle down. But one day they get sent away to a mysterious place called Cambridge Falls where they got to live with the weird Dr. Pym. There are strange things happening at their new home and when they start to explore the house, they find a book that sends them on a crazy adventure through time.

What I liked so much about this book is that I just had so much fun reading it. After a lot of darker books, this was just perfect and exactly what I needed. And although this one had its darker moments too, it was definitely outweighed but all the crazy adventures and funny moments.

I also really enjoyed the writing. Since I read the german version of the book it probably is a little bit different from the original text but I think the translator did a good job of capturing the adventure vibe of the story. Although it was a middle grade book I didn't feel like the writing was dumped down or anything, which is always a plus.

Our main characters Kate, Michael and Emma are just lovely together and all have their own unique personality. Although I must say that the family dynamic reminded my a little bit of the Chronicles of Narnia, I enjoyed all the family ties and friendships that were made throughout the story. I also really liked the character development for all of the main characters. Although they were thrust into this new and unknown world, they adapted quickly enough and grew from the frightened children who are waiting for their parents to come back, to our brave and determined heros.

I also enjoyed all the other characters and the villians in this book. They all had their back story and were well developed and you could see that the author had put thought into every little detail.

The pacing was one of the few things that I had a small problem with. The beginning was rather slow, but still motivating, while the end was really fast paced. I liked the world building overall and the world itself but I found it really hard to picture the places and environments. This sometimes happens when I read books in foreign languages but since I read the book in my mother tongue this was a rather big negative for me.

Overall, I highly enjoyed my time with The Emerald Atlas and recommend it to everyone, not just children or young adults, who just need a little distraction from all the darker books and just want to go on a fun and thrilling adventure with clever characters and imaginative world building.

Really enjoyable story with good characters. Liked the take on the time travel elements. Definitely a great audio experience with the fantastic Jim Dale! Looking forward to the next book.

I really wanted to love this, because the kids' destination on the train at the beginning of the book is the depot from which I took my very first train ride in 1st grade. I listened to this on audiobook purely because Jim Dale was the narrator, and sadly he wasn't enough. None of the characters grew on me, and the world building wasn't engrossing for me. Alas.

Wasn't bad at all but probably would have enjoyed it more if I had been within the book's suggested age group.
