I absolutely loved this book! So heartbreaking and beautiful together. It took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did I was hooked. This one is going to leave a book hangover.

So many opportunities for good sex scenes and there was nothing. Felt like there was lack of feeling the love of the characters because the reader was not let in to all of their love story
Tough to get through the beginning and get to the good stuff, but worth it. Heartbreaking ending, interesting story set up.
I surprisingly enjoyed this book. I loved the time period in which it was set and the characters were well-rounded. The story was heartbreaking, but redemptive, and though the ending left me emotionally drained, it gave me a sense of love and hope for the characters’ futures. If you’re a Kate Morton fan, you may enjoy this one.

This one was in our LFL at work. It’s historical fiction set in 1920/30s England. It is two interwoven storylines. The first is a little girl staying with her severe grandmother on the sprawling, lonely family estate while her parents are in Burma on business. She is sent on a scavenger hunt her mom set up, which leads her through clues about her mother’s former life as an upper echelon socialite in the 20s—which is the second storyline. A few other POVs slip in and out, but those are the main two. There is a doomed love element, as the mother’s character falls in love with a broke artist who she can’t possibly be with because her family would disapprove. Heartbreak ensues. This was well written. Great imagery and flow and pacing… but pretty predictable. I certainly didn’t have any surprises while reading this. And it wasn’t necessarily revolutionary as far as literature goes. I didn’t fully buy into the love story. It’s quite beautifully described, but I wish the author had done a little more work to get me there before they smooched. The ending was a tiny bit drawn out, but I was emotionally invested by the end, even if it did wrap up a little too nicely for my tastes (I’m not a fan of an ending tied up with a bow). The cover was actually kind of off putting. Could have used a much better cover design. The text is higher caliber than that low budget design job. If you like star crossed romance and post war England plot lines, you might like this one.
