A book that will make you stop and think. The story of Maddy is heart-breaking but beautifully told.
This book is powerful, important, sad, and promising all at once. It deals with social media, pressures on teens/college students, athletics, grades, mental health, and more. A must read for anyone who works with kids, teen, and young adults... for parents... and for all of us who care. Mandy’s story was respectfully told and I hope her pain can be a change agent for others.

Would be significantly better without the author trying to add her own story into it. Nobody cared that you almost quit basketball 20 years ago when this is a book about what led to someone’s suicide

I’d first heard of Madison Holleran a few years ago and was always haunted by her story. This book does a beautiful job of shedding light on her past and the year leading up to her death. I was impressed by the author’s ability to describe Madison’s inner world in such detail.
For parents or teachers or any adult who works with millennials, this is an important read. It gets at a side of social media not commonly portrayed - the fracture between one’s social media and true self, and how that fracture can be destabilizing. So many modern commentaries only focus on cyberbullying etc, but Madison’s story illustrates a different angle.
One star off because the author put entirely too much of her own story in here. I know it’s meant to bring details to life, but I found it super distracting and it pulled me out of the main story. Perhaps if I knew the author I’d be more invested - but truthfully I just didn’t care that much about her own life.

This book is a great and thoughtful read, even if it's also heartbreaking because you know how it's going to end. Fagan intersperses her own experiences as an athlete and how the grind wears on your mental health, with Maddy Holleran's, a college athlete who was ultimately overwhelmed by the stressors of trying to be everything to everyone. This is a really great book if you're interested in the mental health issues that persist particularly within women's athletics and how they've been ignored for far too long.
Terrifying and difficult to read, this gave some insights into the pressures this young woman was experiencing that pushed her to suicide.
A must read for teachers, parents & anyone who cares about young people.
