Tess of the Road

Readers will either love this book or hate it. It is very character driven. The story arc is entirely about Tess' personal development. Tess is a deeply flawed character who has been deeply hurt. She makes mistakes. But she learns and grows. If you're looking for fantasy adventure, this book will not satisfy you. The fantasy is the backdrop to the character.

There are definitely some heavy themes in this book that make it better for an older audience - rape/date rape, patriarchy and forcing women into puritanical, limiting roles in life, slut shaming, unwed teen pregnancy, elder abuse. Hartman doesn't pull punches. But cruel and hard as life can be, Tess keeps on walking one day at a time.

pretty good. tess's internal journey adn struggle were enjoyable and realistic. ADVENTUURE

The blurb I read for this called it "fantasy for the #metoo movement." This really irked me. It struck me as using a buzzy trendy word to get people to pay attention to a book that doesn't need additional buzz or trendiness.

This is a phenomenal book, and it stands on its own two feet.

Yes, there are issues that the #MeToo movement is addressing, but you know what? Those aren't a just-now trend thing. This is a book that holistically addresses a whole range of issues and situations, in a profoundly real and true manner. The way it is written rings more true, for me, than decades of similar girl-on-the-road books have before. It doesn't elide the less-photogenic stuff.

It is also a fantastically well-written book with adventure, wonderful characters, lots of imagination, and even some humor. It is uplifting and fun to read and in short, to me, very nearly a perfect book.

This is my #MeToo book

Sometimes, you find a book that heals something deep inside you. This is that book.

It’s not a fast-paced dragon adventure (although Tess faces plenty of danger), and it’s not a fun-filled road trip book (although the road is long and filled with plenty of misadventures). However, Tess of the Road is a fantasy primer for the #MeToo movement, that grasps the danger of being a women in a man’s world. What’s more, Tess is not a sweet innocent that gets in over her head. She’s not even particularly likeable at the start, but she is painfully, beautifully real. Here is a women that doesn’t need to be simplified to be relatable.

For a story set in a deeply medieval world populated by dragons, it shares remarkable similarities with the modern day. Women hold less sway in society, and have specific societal expectations foisted upon them. It’s almost painful to see how little has changed, but that’s what makes the story so powerful.

Quick warning, this book starts as a slow burn. The pacing is superb, but it may not be easy for everyone to get into. Come for the dragons, stay for the feminism.

I reckommend.

Okay, so this book is slow. In that, nothing really happens. No THING. Instead, it's a grand ol' girlhood bildungsroman with a hero who grows, learns, develops, deals with her s**t and gets on with it. With a few dragons on the side. Deliciously rich, great message and meaning--at least compared to most of the YA goop out there.

That was beautiful. Best of the year? I think so.
