This is a rather odd interlude between big arcs - the Straw-hats are challenged to a Davy Back Fight where 3 games are played and the winning team gets to take a crew member. Of course, no honour among thieves so the Foxy pirates resort to cheating on an epic scale to try and win (though the Straw Hats are not much better!)
Personally I’m too much of an empath so these kind of things end up riling me up with the injustice of it - I can’t say I enjoyed this volume much because of it!
Then Luffy’s fight where he wears an Afro and Usopp talks about black power and stuff - extremely uncomfortable reading there. What the hell, Oda?!

Volume 33 covers chapters 306 - 316, which is essentially the entirety of the Davy Back fight. I can't say that I was a big fan of this the first time I went through the story, as I was itching to get to the next arc and wondered why this was even necessary. But, upon reflection, I find this to be the perfect place to slow down the pace before the events of the next arc start getting into gear. It's enjoyable seeing the crew engage in some wild antics with a foe who has powers they've never seen before. Will they lose their crew forever, or will Luffy be able to emerge victorious?
Super weak volume and really bad racist tropes in here. Nasty.

Davy Back Fight, a welcome distraction from some of the more serious plots that have been happening.
The Davy Back Fight is MUCH shorter then in the anime, which goes on for 20 some episodes, but is only a volume in the manga. This makes it more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, this was the weakest installment for now, my goodness, it took me almost 2-3 days to finish this volume. This sets place in the Long long island (can't even bother to remember the name) and they had a davy back fight between Foxy pirates and Mugiwara pirates. There were some funny moments, especially the 2nd battle with Zoro and Sanji, but the rest was so boring. This small arc is the arc that I've hated the most. But I was touched by Luffy's determination at the end of this volume. 2.5 stars, too weak, hng!
