mysterious
slow-paced
Enjoyable to read a crime story set in Scotland. I like in walking distance from Jackie's flat! I felt there were some clichés in the characters, and I guessed the murderer about half way through. Like many of Val McDermid books there was good technical forensic knowledge used to help nail the killer.
This was not what I expected.
Brilliantly written, emotionally draining and overall an excellent story.

Another mystery full of twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.
This was super interesting and I was absolutely engrossed.
I really enjoyed how it was written and even though I worked out the whodunnit early on, the insight to the consequences of assuming someone is was guilty fascinating and very sad.
Rosie Duff's murder was the beginning of the end for a lot of people and it was so interesting to see that butterfly effect from the very beginning. It just kept getting bigger and bigger.
I'm not sure why this is call the Karen Pirie series though because she was barely in it, perhaps that changes as the series goes on. I'll definitely be reading more so I guess I'll find out.
This is also an ITV show and I'm for sure going to watch it.

I think I expected something that was a more traditional "who done it" so the structure of this book threw me a bit.
Four students come across a body one night, and in the process of the investigation become suspects though nothing is ever proved. 25 years later, the case is re-opened, and the four (whose relationships were forever tainted by their experience, are once more in the spotlight.
McDermid is a master of twists, turns, and planting new information, so as to maintain interest and keep you guessing.

I will def be reading more Val McDermid.
Excellent - I was transported to St Andrews in 1978 and then fully accepted the transition to 2003.
I did wonder why the cover refers to this as Karen Pirie novel since her part is quite small. But I will read #2.

Intricately plotted, varied and interesting characters, meticulously drawn locations and procedures: so far so normal for a Val McDermid. I've read and enjoyed the fourth in this series recently, so decided to go back to the beginning of it.
I was not disappointed. The structure of it is different from Out Of Bounds, but the verve of the story is just as captivating.
Genuinely loved this book. On to the next!
