I'm annoyed at myself for finishing this book so quickly but I couldn't bloody help it ! It was too good. I listened to it as an audiobook, and Clarke is so engaging and skilled at storytelling that this book could've been twice as long and it still wouldve felt like no time at all.

one of funniest memoirs I've ever had the pleasure of being read to, by the man himself
as opposed to your usual joe soap's biography, cooper clarke talks not only of himself for the entirety of the book but of ever changing world around him, the characters he meets, unparalleled with anecdotes and analogies, never once feeling sorry for himself and comes complete with choice of newly acquainted catchphrases
this is the closest thing to the life story of a real life beano character

Wonderfully narrated by the author. Despite covering many topics I have little interest in, Dr John Cooper Clarke kept me enthralled with his pleasant meter, his funny and poignant writing.

I was born one year after JCC and about three miles from where he was born, so it was pretty obvious this was going to resonate with me. I grew up with much the same memories: UCP cafes, meat and potato pies, running home on a Friday night to watch ‘Ready Steady Go’, and the Twisted Wheel and Jigsaw clubs in Manchester. Even his musical tastes were mine in those early days; Dylan and Captain Beefheart. I chose the audiobook version, and who wouldn’t given his unique style. A five star no-brainer for me, but I really wonder how others not having a similar background might feel about it. It was heavily weighted toward the early years and away from his poetry. But little do I care. I'm smiling.

John Cooper Clarke has lived a full and extraordinary life, and this account of it is hugely entertaining. Written in his unique and inimitable style, he is self-deprecating and witty. The cast of extras is incredible - he's met and worked with a vast array of fascinating characters and delights in them all.

He is frank about his addiction and the time and effort expended in any given situation to make sure he was sorted - that always came first to ensure he could function. You can't help wondering how much more he might have achieved if he had put the same effort into his writing. But less is often more and perhaps we wouldn't revere him so if his output had been more consistent.

I Wanna Be Yours is the life story of a national treasure who has been instrumental in making poetry accessible to everyone. Highly recommended.
