Veronica is a lady in her mid 80s, believes she doesn't have any surviving blood relatives, but decides to make sure - and finds out she does actually have a grandson, Patrick. After a very disappointing first meeting, and a TV show about penguins, Veronica takes a trip to the Antarctic to see if a research centre is worthy of giving her millions of inheritance to....
This is a really lovely feel good book, about family and relationships, grief and hardships, and growth as a person. It's light-hearted, despite covering some quite heavy topics, and a really easy read. I really enjoyed the audiobook, and enjoyed that each characters chapters were read by different narrators - it makes it an even better experience.
The diaries were some of my favourite parts, and I loved untwisting Veronica's history alongside Patrick. It was fascinating to hear her memories from the war, and also, was a stark reminder to make sure you know your grandparent's stories before it's too late.
I really liked the epilogue, I didn't know I needed it but it put a big smile on my face. This is nothing remarkable or groundbreaking, hence the 4 stars, but is still an enjoyable read.

This was an easy read. I enjoyed the extracts of Veronica’s diary more than other sections of the book, the penguins were cute and thought some of the facts thrown in were interesting. If your looking for a quick easy read then this one won’t disappoint if a bit predictable but sometimes you just need a book to give you a feel good vibe.

Ultimately, I found this a soothing love story of family and penguins. To soothe is to have a calming effect or to lessen discomfort, and in order to calm there has to be a disquiet or discomfort that first exists. Veronica began life in harmony but due to World War II that harmony was soon dispelled. This is the story of her downs, ups, downs and up again, thanks to the penguins.
Easy to read, enjoyable to absorb, the tale is voiced by several people, Veronica, her grandson Patrick, and Terry the Penguin Blogger. Other characters play important roles and we learn more about each of them through Veronica's and Patrick's voices.
I am interested in reading Hazel Prior's first book (this one is her second), Ellie and the Harpmaker. You can learn a little bit about Hazel, her two books, and her harp playing by watching her short videos.

4.5 stars. Endearing and enjoyable. I think the overall message of “the individual is worth more than the society as a whole” was uniquely told. I’ll read more by this author. This one I listened to and the narration was lovely.
A sweet story that sometimes went on too long. I listened to this on Audible and would rate it 3.5 just because there were parts that seemed to drag on.
