There's an industry practice of blasting sand at metal to clean it, right? This book is like that - like I imagine it might be to be caught in a sandstorm. It stings relentlessly and at times you'll rally against it - the characters go from children to youths, and are as self-sabotaging as they are heroic - but when it's over, you're left raw in a way that feels spiritual - like you've come away with something new.

This was a good book but a hard read for me. The story is a fantasy Afrofuturistic book. I think I struggled because at times it felt as if it was written in the past and other times it felt post-apocalyptic. The timeline is not entirely in order, so you know how it will end in the beginning and that is what made it hardest for me finish. I enjoyed the imagery and source material. For example, there was a reference to people that grow dreadlocks and their counter cultural beliefs that many do not know and that I rarely see referenced in fictional literature. If you enjoy worldbuilding, fantasy and Afrofuturism, then this is an author to follow.
Excelente.

Characters are just not engaging enough to keep my interest--especially with the incredibly dark subject matter. Uneven plot as well. Definitely a lot to like as well, and I understand why others might find this compelling, but it is not for me.
Such a brutal story, but beautiful as well. If it were a different time in my life, maybe if have gotten through the book faster, but it is what it is. I'm glad I read it.

This book was very boring to me. I only finished it because I have a tshirt with a list authors' name on it and I wanted to read a book from each author on the list and she was one of them.
The book took way too long to get to the point and then when it did it was only 10 pages max of finally confronting and defeating the main villain. The only element that I think people hype up is that it has African culture woven throughout the book but it means nothing is the story is weak.
