There is a reason this book is on the National Book Awards 2020 nonfiction long list, it’s a refreshing and novel account of the lives of undocumented immigrants. Truly personal and moving.

I appreciated the lack of statistics / simply stated facts in this book. The authors writes it as a collection of stories that are all related to some large theme. This style made the stories, in my opinion, much more impactful. The book is truly heart wrenching and one that more people need to read.

Another book I never would have discovered on my own, but one I feel like everyone should read.

Powerful and rightfully bitter. As an immigrant and child of immigrants, so much rings true, and so much breaks my heart, and quite a bit makes me want to start fires.

I wasn’t sure if I’d like this when I started, but once I got used to the writing style, I had a hard time putting it down! It’s very raw and real, and I can understand why some people would struggle with it, but it’s so worth the read. The stories are heart-wrenching and eye-opening and I commend the author and everyone she interviewed for being open and vulnerable to tell these important stories.

Just finished this and typing this review through watery eyes. This book is heartbreakingly beautiful. Karla Cornejo Villavicencio's meticulous detail about life as an undocumented immigrant makes you ache. Her words humanize a people group who many Americans are quick to dehumanize. I'm convinced that if we took the time to get to know the stories of immigrants, like the ones she shares, and not just statistics, we would be a kinder and better country.
