This book was a fantastic sequel!! I LOVE that JM Kearl started with a book 1 synopsis. This needs to be done more. There’s tons of world building, descriptive writing, and action! This story really kept me guessing! Can’t wait for book 3!

4.5 ⭐️

Just like with BBTEQ, I flew through this so quickly. Everything flowed really well and I didn’t want to put it down. There was a ton of action and more heat between Layala and Thane. I did find myself missing the enemy vibes from book 1, but we got a fun new trope. One bathtub is now a thing.

There were some aspects that had me so nervous and I was bothering everyone I knew reading this too with my theories! I don’t know if there will be a love triangle moving forward, but I’m still Team Thane all the way!! And little Tifapine was just as great in this book. I didn’t know I needed a drunken little gnome in my life.

THAT ENDING?! What?! I did not see half of that coming and I’m not sure how I’m supposed to survive until book 3. That was crazy, I have so many questions and need answers ASAP. Book 3 can’t come fast enough. I can’t wait to see where J.M. Kearl takes the series now. If you haven’t started the Elf Queen series don’t put it off any longer!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: yes
spice: a couple mildly open-door spicy scenes
TWs: kidnapping, torture, death, murder
standalone: book 2 in The Elf Queen series
final thoughts: this book was a lot more mystery/thriller/adventure than book 1 and I was loving it! Lots of new situations, creatures, and several twists. The world building continues in this book as we get to see a lot more traveling and we get to see the relationship develop between the MCs- reader beware: massive cliffhanger!! Luckily book 3 is out so we don’t have to wait to see how the story continues to unfold!

I liked this book better than the first one by quite a bit.

There seemed to be more going on than in the first book. I wasn’t a huge fan of the stupid decisions in order to reunite as quickly as possible, but other than that it was a great book.

The world building was subtle and didn’t interfere with the questions/mystery that reader is exploring.

DNF - I heard stuff about the 3rd book that makes the first two books literally pointless. I give up.

I'm a bit conflicted with this one...

It's great that we got more Black Mage in the novel and the inclusion of sirens was also a nice touch. However, I wasn't happy about the many lives sacrificed for our MCs and the pacing could have been better.

A little slow/long but all the big battle scenes and adventures were fun enough that the parts in between weren’t too bad. However, where is the romance! I need the banter and the silliness in both MCs! That was just… gone. But the ending got me psyched we’ll get more romance from multiple POVs
