This had an interesting premise. But I think it fell short in its world building. I could never quite get a grasp of what kind of world this was taking place in, at times it felt medieval, others, Victorian, and some somewhere in between. There also weren’t that many explanations for why things are the way they are. For a large portion, this almost felt like a Gothic drama rather than a fantasy. Not bad by any means, but almost felt unfinished maybe? I wonder if the following books give more weight to the world and flesh it out some, but I think I have to sit on this one for a little while before deciding if I’ll continue.

This was okay. It had some promising aspects to it, the prequel top tier. Where was that prequel energy during the rest of the book??? It set up something where it was like wow this is gonna be good and then it was like oh.

I can't exactly tell you what happened in this book as it felt like filler. Some scenes were gripping and others were like what's the point of this being there. There was like no character development through the book which was very odd as that's what characters are supposed to do - develop.

The relationships between some characters were also very strange. The love interest was bland where was his spice, where is the drama. Their relationship was the weirdest of all as it went from them being curious to being friends and then doing the dance with no pants and him proposing. They had literally kissed not even 50-100 pages before I want to say. It was very strange and has made me realise I like slow burn romance

The FMC and her sisters are such a breath of fresh air! They're intelligent, confident and gloriously chaotic, and Lark is literally mischief incarnate. The way she trolls/teases everyone is mwah, absolutely beautiful. Their family dynamic is a standout - they love each other so much!

This book has a strong start, it pulled me in right away. How can something filled with deadly magic, monsters and chopped fingers be so delightful? The writing is charming and captivating, and the worldbuilding is rich.

The romance is slow-burn and sweet, and I thought it was built up well. My heart ached for the MMC, he needs the biggest hug in the world.

The pacing is a bit on the slowish side, but I didn’t mind, I enjoyed reading about characters' inner thoughts and feelings (and Lark's shenanigans).

Overall, it was a great and enjoyable read. I can't wait to start Book 2, which follows the middle sister and her pirate.

Wonderfully atmospheric, this is the best book I have read this year. It has a lot of gothic elements and feels like a Bluebeard retelling. The dialogue is excellent and it never felt rushed or boring.
