So I actually read this first when I was younger, maybe when I was 10 or 11? And I thought it was really cool, I loved the dragons and the magic and everything. I decided to re-read it, and then read the rest of the series sometime this year, and uh. It definitely did not hold up at all, lol.

Simply put, the book is bad. Like, really bad. The writing is tedious, the characters and their interactions with one another are flat, and the story dragged for forever. The "climax" was a blur of a battle scene, and that was it. I didn't care for any of the characters, even when the author was trying so hard to make the reader sympathize with them.

And my goodness, the use of the traditional fantasy tropes was....annoying....to say the least.

I first read this when this came out (I was in middle school then), and now I've just read it again as an adult. As many have said, it is super trope-y, but it's to be expected when it's the work of a 16-year-old. Beat for beat, it's basically Star Wars: A New Hope, but with dragons. I remember really liking this as a kid, but it's super violent, which I don't so much like now.

A compelling start to series. Many things that occur in this book set up later events in the series.
