After finally getting the funding she needed, Dr. Alice Christopher gathers a team of four other women for an expedition into the infamous Moresby Forest. A forest with a history of mysterious occurrences. Armored with the latest gear and equipment, the five women venture into the depths of the unknown, ready to unearth the secrets that lay hidden. But soon the women discover that all is not what it seems and the forest is teaming with more than just the flora of the region.

The Dark Between the Trees is a slow and creepy read. The story is told with two timelines — 300 years in the past and then present day. It was a little confusing at first, but once the rhythm is established, the transitions became smooth as silk.

The plot is straightforward with very little twists and turns. There were, however, some unexpected surprises along the way for that “didn’t see that coming” effect.

I didn’t particularly care for any of the characters as they all seemed to carry their egos on their shoulders. Teamwork didn’t appear to be in their vocabulary. It was like every man for himself.

For the most part, The Dark Between the Trees was a decent read. A little weird at times and eerie at others. I didn’t care too much for the ending. It wasn’t a cliffhanger, but it wasn’t satisfying either. Three stars.

I received a digital ARC from Rebellion Publishing through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

This book was simply not my cup of tea. All of the tension building was fantastic in about the first third ! By the time we, as readers, really start to understand what’s going on, the plot feels a bit repetitive. I loved the concept!

Unfortunately I just found this book kind of boring. I really wasn't invested in the soldiers side of the story at all. I didn't care about the talk of war and the group's politics. I liked the modern side more, but by the end the characters ended up kind of frustrating. Overall I wasn't really scared, as the danger never felt real,

I picked this up from the library purely because the cover called to me and when I read the blurb I couldn't resist it. The premise for this story sounded so good and it absolutely is. The concept of two trips into a mysterious woodland hundreds of years apart are both fates and maybe connected is a great one for a story.

Sadly this book falls short of delivering on that promise.

I think the biggest issue is we never really get to know the women and so they are just names in a book rather characters we can connect with. That does change a bit with Nuria and Alice but only in the last third of the story and then mostly we it is Alice who is slowly revealed to us but it also feels too little too late to create any depth of character or connection.

The soldiers felt more fleshed out but even they were hard to distinguish between and mostly they too were names on a page.

It is rare that I say a book is too short, mostly authors make the mistake of waffling on and on but this book is too short. We need more character development, more build up to the event to allow us to invest in these women and understand them so that when faced with the horrors of the woods we understand better the decisions they make.

I will definitely keep and eye out for more by this author as this story was a great idea with real potential is just needs, well, more!

Really enjoyed the concept of this book. Loved some of the characters, however many of them are given a back story and never mentioned again.

The ending felt a little incomplete and too open ended for my liking.

But still overall enjoyed.

However, Alice is a bad archaeologist/historian... Especially as the author seems to merge both these displines lol

Immersing myself in this gripping tale that seamlessly weaves between two timelines proved to be an enjoyable descent into the heart of horror. The pacing of the narrative is relentless, with a writing style that moves at an exhilarating speed, propelling the reader through the eerie landscapes of both the 17th century and the present day. What struck me most was the skillful interplay between different legends—the swift and haunting transitions between the realms of witchcraft, shadows, and the devil himself. The author masterfully keeps the reader on edge, creating an atmospheric blend of suspense and folklore that leaves a lasting chill. A must-read for those who relish the art of storytelling that navigates effortlessly between the terrors of past and present."

I haven’t been this mad at a book in years.

I’ll preface this by saying I’m a folk horror stan, this book got a great deal of hype in my circles and I’m incredibly grateful for the ARC.

Buuuuut, this book made me intensely mad. What could have been a tight study on hubris, isolation and misogyny becomes a somewhat lazy and underdeveloped amble through the woods.

The many attempts at building lore fall away as fast as they’re built and as each micro mystery becomes somewhat solved 50 more strands unfurl. This pattern continues to the rather confusing end. Is end even the right word?

I can’t tell whether there was a page count limit or a lack of ideas but there is no end to this book…
