If I could have DNF’d this book at page 298 I would have and I still would have known as much as I did upon finishing it.
If you like a book that builds up and then fails to provide an ending, you will enjoy this.
I did not enjoy this.

Started this on my lunch break and couldn't wait to get home and finish it the same day, which I did easily. Great slow build of tension and an eerie yet bizarre feel to the setting which just upped the creep factor. This isn't a book with fast-paced action but I think it's stronger for it - it lets some of the sections make more of an impact. I thought the little details fell together naturally and didn't seem forced, and while I initially thought some of the remaining mysteries maybe could have been answered, with further thought I'm actually not disappointed by the idea that I didn't have every single thing explained and in fact think I prefer it. I don't think this story will be for everyone but I very much enjoyed it, and will be keeping my copy around to re-read (probably around Halloween!).

The concept of this book is killer. I absolutely love the dual timeline approach.
However. Something about this book just teetered into frustrating for me. There were a lot of characters to track, and I wish there would've been fewer of them with more personality so their fates would feel more impactful. While the setting was definitely a mysterious, intriguing place, some of the descriptions began to feel repetitive.
I am a big fan of unexplained mysteries and phenomena, but some of my interest in them fizzled out towards the end of the book. I have no strong feelings about the ending-- the book simply... ended, and I closed it and moved on.

2.5, rounded down.
Good ideas but poorly executed.
Also some continuity problems.
"[Roberts'] left arm was gone completely from about the elbow downwards."
Few pages later:
"Roberts lifted a shaking finger - on his left hand, and they all grimaced and tried not to imagine where his severed right hand might now be."
