What a rollercoaster. Felt like I lived 3 lives. Never read SO MUCH PLOT in one book. Nice to read about Latin America. Nice to finally meet my namesake as well. The first 3/4 is ahh what a quirky family the last 1/4 is
the horrors of war.
Sort of like Encanto but super fucked up. Will read it again in 20 yrs.

whew 😅 what a whirlwind

Isabel Allende is a masterful storyteller. i was ENGROSSED in this generational family saga intertwined with humor, politics, strong female characters, and of course tragedy. it’s magical realism at its finest. if you like your books a little weird and a lot spicy, you will absolutely love the house of the spirits

i’m still reflecting on the meaning and messages woven in here.
  • how does one redeem themselves after they realize they’ve lived a long life of displacing their anger on to everyone around them?
  • how do we balance the love we have for family with the ethical differences that lie between us?
  • in what ways do we carry the decisions of our ancestors within us?

This was a beautifully written and translated novel with such a delightful use of magical realism. As with most of the books I read, I had no clue what to expect going in, but it wasn't long before I was captivated by the story and the storytelling. Normally I'm not one for magical realism (not that I've read many featuring it at all), but at times, this book literally felt like magic was within its pages and I was here for it.

Certain repeated behaviours from some of the main characters, and how they were relayed to the reader, did make for uncomfortable reading now and again, but then Allende's choices in which perspectives the story was told from do leave the reader conflicted about what to really think or feel.

Overall, a wonderfully told story which memorable protagonists!
