a fantastic memoir. one of the best books i've ever read. the prose is gorgeous, poetic, and intense. the content is absolutely phenomenal (and i especially love how everything written in this novel--no matter how bizarre or out-of-place it initially seems--ties back to one overarching theme). carmen maria machado's writing is on another level.

2019: In the Dream House just absolutely floored me, it’s like nothing else I’ve ever read because nothing like it exists, Carmen Maria Machado is just brilliant. This was an ARC, it comes out in November, you should read her book “Her Body and Other Parts” while you wait. Even though the subject is tough, the writing and way she tells this story is so incredible, beautiful, heartbreaking, yet comforting, and in her style- other worldly.

2022: Reread this with the audiobook and it is beautifully read by the author, she almost sounds like she's performing a poetry reading, which in some parts of the book is pretty accurate. It remains a beautiful, inventive, haunting, and necessary book.

I had a general idea as to what the memoir was about, but I underestimated just how much abuse, especially towards lesbian relationships get swept under the rug. I really enjoyed reading the author's point of view on the subject and her writing style was also quite unique and not something I was used to when reading a memoir (I mean, having a chose your own adventure part in a memoir was not what I was expecting).

I was quite intrigued at her decision of writing the story of her abusive relationship in the second person, which I had first just thought of it being her trying to put some distance between the author's past self from her current self, but only realized a little later that it could have also been used to have the readers picture themselves in the situation.

It is definitely not a light read, but I would be lying if I said this book didn't make me think. I do recommend this book to fellow queer folks because the subjects tackled in it is problems within our own community and that we need to care enough to fix it, otherwise, no one else will.

Wow. okay. first opening line.
"If you need this book, it is for you"
And Jesus did I need this book. I often have trouble putting words to feelings I have and to find those words my first step is finding media that pertains to whatever it is I'm going through.
Needless to say, given that this was 5 stars for me, those words were found and they broke my ribs and they festered there and then they made me feel better about everything.
I don't know that I've ever gotten through a book like this. Like I was devouring it. I think I often struggle with waiting until the ending of a book but in this case, I wanted to live in there forever.

I think part of that could be just how fully seen I felt and how fresh my feelings are but I also think that this is objectively incredibly well written.

READ THIS.
if you've been in an abusive relationship (especially a queer one. Oh my god.)
If you've ever read Little Weirds by Jenny Slate- this is like her battered (lol) older sister and she's here to kill you.
If you're only ever gonna read one book for the rest of your life. Let it be this one
