I really liked the feminist twist to the story and seeing Tracy start out on her career, but I felt like it was a little too short and could have been expanded.

This answered so many questions!

This short story provided so much background. I have a much better understanding of Tracy's feelings toward with Nolasco. Love her spunk and willingness to help others succeed.

This was a fantastic character introduction that has totally endeared me to Tracy with her no nonsense demeanour and care for others around her. In the male dominated police academy described, there is one male in particular who goes from inappropriate to full blown harassment of the women under his training. Tracy time and again comes back at him and defends her fellow trainees with her internal and external strengths, while also doing so professionally and without lowering herself to a lesser standard than she deems acceptable. The following exchange is one of the first and also much more minor of occurrences she comes to face, and one of many examples of how much I love her handling of the situation:

“Seattle’s never had a female homicide detective. Did you know that?” Granum asked.
“Then I intend to be the first.”
“The hours, the stress, the demands of the job...,” Nolasco said. “What are you going to do if you get pregnant?”
Decker cringed
“What do the men do?” Crosswhite asked.

I hugely admire the character that has been created in Tracy Crosswhite and this book has served its purpose well in getting me excited for the rest of the series!

This is a short story prequel to the Tracy Crosswhite series. It first introduces Tracy, interviewing to join the police force (with the eventual goal of becoming a homicide detective) and going through training. We are also introduced to Nolasco who is literally the worst. And Jenny Almond who also makes an appearance in a few of the series’s books.

Tracy Crosswhite is a total badass. I knew this already since I’ve read 7 books about her now. But this story about her starting out just truly set the scene and her character.

A very short story with an interesting protagonist. The sexism displayed by the protagonist was rage inspiring, as intended I'm sure. I did wonder about the year it was written. Dugoni hits the nail on the head as far as depicting the way sexual harassment goes unreported. However, I think there is a cutoff point for how much a woman will take, and that depends largely on the era she was born. Which is why I wondered about when this was written. I will have to check on that after I finish the review. Of course what I would put up with and what other women would put up with is not necessarily the same in any era. Full out grabbing a woman's breast and her crotch in front of a whole class of people is well beyond the cutoff point for me. (The bad guy must have been a Trump supporter.)

At any rate, I'm interested in reading further. I hope future installments cut back on the sexism, not because Dugoni is glorifying it. He is demonstrating how disgusting it is for sure. I hope he cuts back because it gets to me so bad I can't concentrate on the other great parts of the story telling.

The Seattle Police Department is selecting new recruits to join the force with a specific mandate to seek out a few women. Tracy Crosswhite is a chemistry teacher who has applied, along with another young woman. One detective on the selection committee is determined to help her fail before she graduates from the Academy.

This was short but feels like a perfect setup for what’s to come as I can’t wait to dig into the series. We get a taste of what Tracy may be facing based on the misogynistic behavior of some of the members of the department. I really like her style and she’s cool under pressure. Tracy’s also quick witted if how she handled a dicey situation in the Academy is an indicator. I listened to the story and am impressed with the narrator who will be the voice for the series. She distinguished the characters nicely, adding flavor to those who needed some. I’m definitely getting the audiobooks and am eager to get started.
