Such a strange story, not in a bad way by any means but I’m not entirely sure how to properly review this. There were many aspects that I thoroughly enjoyed but there were also moments that I didn’t. I enjoyed the three sisters, they were all so different from one another, but I didn’t enjoy their relationship with each other. Maybe as a sister of three I just couldn’t get behind all the hatred, animosity and just plain evilness they had towards each other. Undine was absolutely wretched to Marlinchen and for no reason at all. Rose was a smile in your face while stabbing you in the side kind of person and I honestly don’t know who was worse. I’ve never read the Grimm’s The Juniper Tree, so I didn’t have any reference for that to compare, but I loved the macabre, darkness and gore that was themed throughout the story that is so reflective of a Grimm tale. I guessed what was going on pretty early on in the story, so the twist didn’t really twist for me. The writing style was exceptional and Ava Reid really does drawn the reader into each scene. A dark, horrific story that addresses several dark and horrific issues. I am satisfied with how the story ends but a few missteps along the way for me.
