Oh. Oh boy. I don't really know where to begin.

This was one of the most rambly, if not THE most rambly, non-fiction book I have read in a long, long time. I am awarding it 1.75 stars for some useful tidbits in select chapters.

This book could easily have been one third of its length if all that extra fat (specifically the lengthy, barely related discussions of Bible passages) had been trimmed.

Some anecdotes, metaphors, and parables (for lack of a better word) are downright bizarre, including the infamous lobster passage right at the start.

Recommendation: If you are really, really intent on consuming this book, make it an audiobook and play it on at least 1.5x.

Peterson is too dualistic for me. I do enjoy reading works of dualist philosophy, but Peterson imposes his dualism on systems that are not dualistic (like Christianity) which can lead to a sort of Manichaeism.

4.5/5 Lots of great advise and interesting musings. JP tends to meander and get sidetracked from his main point but it always stayed interesting.

It has some real and important wisdom, despite some of the problematic passages here and there. (Gender roles are well and good if they work for you, but why the emphasis on empowerment overcoming the tyranny of biology then an assumption that we can't evolve our conceptions of gender and gender roles?) I did gain a lot of truly helpful knowledge from this book, despite being a totally left winger woman. I actually still do recommend it. The world is better off with this book in it. Left wingers, just roll your eyes at the annoying passage or remark here and there, and you will find valuable wisdom if you push forward. Also, I think his behavioral approach to parenting is spot on.
