You can always count on Phaedra Patrick to offer up a love story that restores your faith in humanity.

This one is about Mitchell Fisher, who quits his high-paying love after his wife's death so that he can take care of their daughter Poppy. Michael's current assignment is to remove the locks from a bridge before the opening of a brand new bridge in the city. One day he spots a woman placing a lock on the bridge and then jumping in to the river below. Without much thought, he jumps in after her and saves her life.

He doesn't know anything about her and is surprised to learn that he knows her estranged sister Liza. Together Liza, Michael and Poppy embark on a journey to find her.

3.5 stars. A cute story, like all of Patrick’s works, but my least favourite thus far.

I read this one because it was an EVPL bookclub pick. It is probably not one I would have picked up otherwise, but I really enjoyed it. The story centers around Mitchell Fisher who is pretty down on romance since he lost his wife (and his daughter Poppy's mother). His job is to cut off padlocks that couples fasten to the famous "love story" bridge for the city. As an architect he knows that the extra weight is not good for the bridge. One day a woman in a yellow dress falls into the river from the bridge and Mitchell jumps in to save her without thinking. He feels an immediate connection to her, but can't even learn her name before she disappears. He ends up finding her sister Liza and is shocked to learn that the woman in yellow has been missing for a year. She did leave a padlock on the bridge. Mitchell, Poppy, and Liza all work to solve the mystery and find the woman in yellow. The characters are well developed and grow throughout the story. The romance is sweet and believable. It's a very charming book about second chances and new beginnings in unexpected places.

4 a padlock around my heart stars!!!

I fell in love with Mitchell almost immediately, and not even in my next book boyfriend way it was more of a I want to take care of this person way. He is barely holding on by a thread and can’t even see it. While this book does revolve around him trying to find the mysterious girl on the bridge, it is all about Mitchell and him discovering that he is so deeply still grieving his partner. Everything that he has done up until now may not have been healing him and his daughter like he thought it was. Poppy his daughter was a sort of light in the darkness in the book. I do have to say the only thing I didn’t like is she is to be 9 years old and I know kids mentally grow in different stages, her grammar and mannerisms were more of a 11 year old. That being said everything else about his daughter was absolutely delightful. Mitchell does evolve throughout the book and takes us on quite an emotional ride with him. Everyone he meets or interacts with seems to have a story to tell or something to teach him.

I don’t want to say to much more about to many characters, but the front desk man Carl was a delight. I could have a whole book on him and be fine with it. This whole book just flowed for me, if I wouldn’t have had work and kids I probably would’ve just sat and read the whole thing. The idea of people writing letters to one another and telling their stories is such an interesting thought. In our household we actually still write letters and send cards but I wonder how many other households do that? Do people still do Pen Pals?

Thank you to Phaedra Patrick, Park Row Books, and NetGalley for a copy in lieu of a copy for my honest review.

More like a 3.5. It's nice easy going story. Nothing heavy, quick read.

The books I read by Phaedra Patrick are at the same time weird and nice, if that makes any sense. The way the stories happen is kind of weird - something random happens, but then the main character's whole purpose in life becomes to solve a mystery surrounding it. Then there's a weird sequence of events in which the mystery is solved, and in the end, you feel good about it even though the story itself is absurd. In this particular book, Mitchell is working for the city when he spots a woman falling off a bridge. He goes on to the water to rescue her. But then the weird connections start when the person that fell on the water was actually related to her daughter's music teacher - which is where her daughter is waiting for him since he is late to pick her up after rescuing the damsel in danger. But at the same time that the story is weird, it is also super cute and makes you rethink your priorities in life. Anyway, weird or not weird, I would definitely read another book by the author.

Much of it feels like a 1940's movie, with cell phones.

This is not for me. It’s a “sweet” romance where the mystery resolution makes no sense. I would equate it to a Hallmark movie but I haven’t actually watched one…but that’s just the vibes I get.

This was a cute story, but very predictable. It is probably my least favorite of this author's works, but was still sweet and enjoyable.
