So hard to read and so good at the same time. Nothing really "enjoyable" about this story except for perhaps the hope that I felt as a reader that Melinda would at some point be able to "speak". As a parent, it was a challenging read - it's so easy to see our children's "bad" or unwanted behavior as defiance that just needs to be stamped out instead of a signal that something much much deeper is probably happening.

I suppose this is probably a spoiler - but my hope was eventually rewarded and I did enjoy the ending. It provided resolution without tying everything up in to a neat bow.

I'm very impressed with Laurie Halse Anderson's work - her characters have stayed in my heart long after I'm done with the book.

I like the message of it but other than that it's too boring. Had to force myself to read it

Tackling another difficult subject, rape, this book shows how poorly those closest to us handle what seems to them to be unexplainable changes in behaviour, especially in teenagers. Moving and brave.

quick (but painful) read, and incredibly well-written; i love that it makes the topic accessible for middle-/highschoolers. very realistic portrayal of the protagonist’s mental journey as she processes what has happened
