Another book about a girl who loves words. I wished the author didn't define every single word Cornelia used- sometimes I felt like I was reading a dictionary with a plot instead of a novel. But, I liked the book! I liked that Virginia was the true heroine. Virginia is Cornelia's 70-something neighbor who shares stories of her travels in the 50s. It was great to think of Cornelia, 11, learning about what it was like to be a girl in the 50s (not allowed into certain hotels or clubs, constantly escorted, etc.) and sweet to see a friendship bridge the generations.
this was my absolute favorite comfort book in like 6th grade and i bookmarked all the big insult words and thought i was so cool for it. but in retrospect this is very patronizing of other countries yikes

Exciting at first read, but then it gets old soon.
I loved this book. I read it when I was very young. It's a story about a little girl who is ignored by her mother and makes a friend of a dying woman in her apartment. Through the dying woman's stories she finds solace. It's really moving and not a boring moment in the book.
One of the books new to Level F since I had read it. It was funny in places but there were elements I didn’t like. Several characters were so negative. The overall tone was negative.
i have loved this book since i was 8. 15 years later i still love it—maybe more now than i did then. it certainly affects me more. as i get older the grownups and their complications are much clearer to me and sweet cornelia is someone i love differently than i did when i was her age. anyway. it’s good to revisit childhood favourites and it feels especially appropriate during my birthday week.
Read for 4th grade book club (soon to be 5th grade book club!). This was a joy!
Honestly, this book was under my age level and and still stinkin loved it. Cornelia is named after a street, which may or may not be a Taylor Swift reference. Regardless, I loved it.
