When You were Everything tells a story by alternating between two times lines of what happened in the past and what was happening now. The story follows Cleo as she loses her best friend and try to navigate this new territory and life without her best friend.
This story was beautifully written and told. I don’t think I have ever read a book that actually focuses on losing a friend and finding your way back to yourself and new found friendships. This book shows that some people are not meant to stay in your life forever. Sometimes people are only meant to be in your life to teach you a lesson and Cleo learned that lesson. This story shows the beauty of self forgiveness (especially when we don’t think we need to forgive ourselves or that we deserve it.) I think all young girls should read this story because at some point in our lives we will lose a friend a best friend and you need to navigate that lost and not lose yourself in the process.
