Second Read Review
This is my second read and for some reason I thought that my rating would have gone down. I wanted to reread since Nothing Like the Movies is now released, but I hade somehow convinced myself this book wasn’t as good as I remember it
I thought I would listen to the audio this time and go ‘aww cute but to childish for me,’ or ‘doesn’t hit the same, it’s okay.’ I am two years older and tastes change
I am very happy to say that was not the case. I loved this just as much this time as the first. It made my heart swell with fondness and love, I laughed at the funny parts, because this is a rom-com after all, got teary at the hard parts, and cringed with second hand embarrassment in multiple parts. Had to stop the audio for a few breaths and prepare myself, even though I knew what was going to happen
Although this is set with 17 year olds in high school and they go to prom. The writing and characters don’t feel to childish or YA. I think I was very much as Liz. A little odd and believed life could be like the movies. With fairytale romances and soon worthy moments with the perfect guy. But no one’s perfect, and every romance is different
I love Wes! He is such an amazing character and loved that he was himself and not just a love interest. If that makes sense
Romance is one of my favourite genres and the chemistry between characters is so different author to author. Some characters in adult books have sex in the first 3 chapters and every few chapters after but you don’t feel anything for them. No chemistry, no yearning. Yet a couple in a YA romance do nothing more than kiss and it’s so much better. I know YA isn’t for every adult as we get older, but I love Lynn Painters writing. I’m glad I remember why I’ve read most of her books
Liz waiting for Wes at the secret spot then him turning up with Alex. Then the whole penny thing
Michael thinking her dress was a uniform
Liz getting thrown up on
Liz getting clocked in the face with a basketball
The promposal!!! OMG. So many emotions. I’m Australian so we don’t do that here and I am very glad of that
I love that Wes’s character makes sense. Him and Liz have a fight and ‘break up’ I guess when she said yes to prom with Michael. And Wes is totally valid in his feelings. There is a bit of miscommunication between them after the kiss, but from his end, he’s loved her for years and wants her to be happy but Liz is the one doing a 180 on him and giving him mixed signals
Valid!! Also happy he is man enough at the end to call her out and say he doesn’t like games. Good man
Very scared for Nothing like the Movies because I know it’s a second chance romance trope SO THAT MEANS THEY BREAK UP FOR SOME REASON!!!! Ahhhhh. Nervous

If you've been following my reviews, which literally no one has, then you know I've been in a young adult romance saga with Jenny Han and her "The Summer I Turned Pretty" trilogy. Dearest Jenny, THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A YA ROMANCE NOVEL!!!
This book just left me smiling almost the entire time. It was so light, cute, and lovely. I really enjoyed the rom-com shout outs and the ever present mental soundtrack with the songs that were mentioned. Big kudos for an actual soundtrack song list at the end. Definitely going to be listening to those.
The main character Libby, Liz, Elizabeth was just adorable and I wanted to hug her and be her friend. Lynn Painter did a could job, in my opinion, of looking into her grief and how that was shaping her senior year and outlook on life and love. Also, Liz's quirkiness brought a lot of humor out of the book too. I found myself laughing out loud more than once.
Then our sweet, precious boy Wes, Wesley, Wessy is just the perfect boy next door. Can I go ahead and get someone like him lined up for my daughter? So flipping cute. I love when a character is still a teenager and somewhat emotionally mature. I honestly feel like Wes represents a lot of teenagers I've known over the years when they typically get a bad rap that's solely based on stereotypes.
Overall, loved this book. It transcends it's YA genre well. I'd recommend it to teenagers and fellow moms in their 30s, it was just that great.
