₊˚⊹⋆ better than the movies ₊˚⊹⋆

⋆ oh my god where do I even start? first this was my first (!) romance/rom-com book ever. don't get me wrong i love romance but until now I've been a dedicated romantasy girlie but I believe that has changed. this book had me smiling like crazy and all I wanted to do was read. just read and forget everything but liz and wes. on one hand it was such a simple and easy read, on the other it was nerve wracking (especially the last third).

₊˚⊹⋆ 🎀 the characters:
liz - she's definitely one if my favourite fmcs ever, I feel like I see myself in her so much, she's so me coded and that makes me so unbelievably happy. the music, the headphones, the clothes, the books and the way she deals with life - i see myself in all that. she might make the wrong choices sometimes but eventually finds a way to fix them. i love her, everything written in this review is a love letter to her.
wes - what can I say? perfect. wes is absolutely perfect in every way. he IS boyfriend and bestfriend goals. he bought liz clothes, he visited her at work, he helped her get the boy she likes while he was madly in love with her, he texted her so much, he watched a movie with her while not being in the same house, he watched a meteor shower with her, he helped her get a prom dress, he planted daisies at liz's mom's grave and he went there with her couple times a week. do you need more? he always used to listen to little liz play piano without her knowing it. I love him.

"And I think I regret all of it. I miss your clothes and curly hair. You look best when you're you."
You look best when you're you. Oh, God.
I just smiled and shrugged as "New Year's Day" by Taylor Swift came on.

That boy has been into you since you were little kids." "Oh, you don't know, do you?" Helena dusted off the front
"No, he hasn't." Her words made a hopeful buzzing start in my ears and fingertips, even though I knew she was wrong.
"He's been into messing with me since we were little kids."

My dad put his arm around Helena and propped his feet on the coffee table. "Did you ever know, Liz, that Wes used to sit on the back porch and listen to you practice the piano? Weet pretended not to see him, but he was always there. And we're talking way back when he was a little pain in the ass and you were awful at playing piano."
She's not you."
"What?"
"She. Isn't. You."
I shut my mouth and looked at him, scared to believe he was saying what it sounded like he was saying.
"She's pretty, but her face doesn't transform into sunlight when she talks about music." He did that clench thing with his jaw and said, "She's funny, but not spit-out-your-drink-in-astonishment funny."
"She's not you."

I'd honestly recommend better than the movies to anyone. Especially the ones who love rom-coms (movies or books), taylor swift's love songs, glitter gel pen songs, happily ever after or just simply for the ones who need an easy, heart-warming read. For this being my first real romance it's sure an amazing one. I'm so excited to read more books by Lynn Painter.

The FMC is simply insufferable most times ! This book is super predictable (obviously) and a little cringe at times. But I can’t say it was the worst YA rom com I’ve ever read. I think audiobooking it made it more cringe. I set myself up for disappointment because I had expected this book to be different than it was and I felt like it was highly recommended. Anyways- quick mindless rom com vibes if that’s the mood!
