IT ONLY GETS BETTER

For six months I dwelled in the dark recesses of my mind, scavenging for any memory at all that would give me a foothold long enough to remember what words I needed in order to find this book series again.
After reading the second book and waiting for the third to come out, somewhere in the stressful muck of my life...I had forgotten the name of the books, and the author. I had forgotten the main character’s name, his species. The only words I could remember were “Winged-lizard-man warrior”. Not exactly helpful in a Google search.
For six months I could not remember the words necessary to rediscover this wonderful series. I knew that the third book had been released by that point, but for the love of God I could not find it.
Finally, only two weeks ago, the name “Raz” popped into my head. I have not an inkling of what triggered the memory, but the name was enough. One Google search of “Raz winged lizard man warrior Son of” later, I had discovered, to my delight, the third book of the series I had been dying to read. Also, I discovered that, like last time, the next book was going to come out one month after I discovered the one most recently published. What timing! (In an attempt to prevent this from happening again, I followed the author on Amazon.)
Anyway, to the part you all wanted to read when you started reading this review (I applaud you if you managed to get this far into my dithering) I was gripped from page one and could not make myself stop until I had to leave for the blight on my life called a job. I finished as soon as I could and I am positively quivering from excitement to get my hands on the next one!

Really interesting and well written. However it did feel like the end of the series. I was surprised to find out there are more.

Loved it. Interesting characters, most of them at least. Loved Raz and Syrah but really didn't care for Reyn, he was a bit of a prick. I liked how the story progressed, despite some minor issues and I like the setup for the next novel and for Raz and Syrah to travel together.
I'm looking forward to more.

I finished this one pretty quickly. It was well written. It touches on many topics such as religious hypocrisy and rigidity, childhood abuse, rape trauma, and people's inability to see past a person's skin.

This was a good book and I look forward to the next one.

This was a another interesting story in the saga of Raz as he battles yet another legion of people who want to do him and the people around him harm. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed this series.

I liked most of this book; it constantly keeps you on your toes and invested and caring about the characters involved.

However, I do have a bit of a sticking point. There are clear ways of marking a person or faction as good or evil, and Bryce O'Connor usually does a pretty good job of approaching this with nuance. His use of rape in this book, however, is about as blunt as it gets. The one nearly-explicit description we get with
SpoilerSyrah in the general's tent - which was blessedly cut off before it actually went all the way -
is sickening as it should be. I felt physically ill, and the couple of other times that it was abbreviated certainly didn't help.

It is also, however, a lazy way of showing how evil a group is. All of the subtle shades of grey that O'Connor approaches with the Laori philosophy in such a dark setting is noticably absent here. Reducing something like rape to a plot point does not sit well with me. I am continuing with the series, but if the ham-handed handling of the topic continues I will certainly be mentioning it here.

Decent ending to the series but I have to feel that the first book and the first half of the 2nd are better. I was glad he didn't shy away from Syrah undergoing realistic deprecations while captured, too often an author lacks the fortitude to have a women main character be used like that. Overall though I felt it was about as good an ending the series could have had
